Your uncommon trip to the Katajanokka hotel – an old Finnish jail

Does a trip to the prison seem somehow madness? And what about spending a few days there? The Hotel Katajanokka in one of the most respectable areas of Helsinki welcomes guests for the unique atmosphere of life in the port city prison!

The building, which was used for the maintenance of prisoners from 1837, in 2007 opened its doors to anyone who wants to try on a robe without breaking the law. Now in this four-star hotel, a special atmosphere is created with the themed interior items. Designers kept the prison corridors with metal bars and stairs, peepholes and the dining room in the basement unchanged. Nevertheless, warm colors make up the main gamut of the interior, so being inside is very comfortable.

Why not become “a prisoner” to enjoy such a rest?

Certainly each room is much more spacious than the prisoner’s cell, in which there was no separate bathroom! As a result of reconstruction and refurbishment, now all rooms are well-equipped. They include extra space, Wi-Fi and TV, writing desk and minibar. The hotels also offers private parking, but it is not free.

Hotel Katajanokka also provides other popular facilities – spa and sauna, fitness center. Also you can have a very good breakfast there. The menu includes gluten-free, vegan and kids options!

The hotel has an excellent location. Only five minutes’ walk from the hotel offers an impressive panoramic view of the city, central square, top restaurants and historical monuments. So, well-know Helsinki Cathedral is in 1 km from hotel, Stockmann shopping Center – in 2 km. Helsinki Central Station is 1.5 km from the hotel. From there, you can arrange an excellent tour of Helsinki on your own, using one of the map applications!
