Germany is an awesome country, seriously! This is such an unusual combination of something of the highest quality and something extremely new and weird. We all remember their Love Parades with amazing DJs, unusual nightclubs, crazy parties and all that. And food is no exception. But just do not think that all Germans eat it every time they are hungry! Let’s begin with
the most unusual meat
- Mett – it’s just that cute hedgehog that greets you in the picture above. Raw pork with salt and pepper. Sometimes onions, garlic and other spices are also added there. Depends on the federal state where you are going. You can find Mett almost everywhere, but more often – Berlin, North and East of Germany.
- Schmalz – just a pig fat that can be used instead of butter on bread. When cooking is in progress, Germans often add various spices, garlic and onions to slightly remove the taste of fat. Such sandwiches are often served for children, as it is believed that Schmalz is a natural source of essential fat.
- Blutwurst – literally blood sausage. Not only Germans cook such sausage, it is generally very popular in European countries (especially in the north). However, the very Germany that knows how to serve it so that it becomes a national feature.
and some crazy cheeses ..
- Milbenkäse – I can’t even calmly look at it )) Milbenkäse means “mite cheese.” While cooking process, it is left in a wooden box with cheese mites. It takes about 3 months – mites eat cheese and mucus they ooze ferments it. By the way, it is produced exclusively in the village of Würchwitz. And yes, they eat it with the living mites.
- Handkäs mit Musik – well here the story is much nicer! Cheese with music! Awesome homemade cheese – they just serve it with caraway seeds, vinegar and onions. This way gives some delicious “notes” to the melody of taste.
and for dessert ..
Well, there’s absolutely nothing odd! It’s just that sometimes the Germans make fun or kidding (especially during some holidays) and serve these delicious buns with a very unusual filling. Usually they add a cream or custard. But when they want to prank you, they can add Tabasco, mustard, onion sauce, shaving foam.. You should be very attentive, good luck!
